Zachary Chitwood

Dr. Zachary Chitwood ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (Byzantinistik) und Principal Investigator des ERC-Starting Grants MAMEMS „Mount Athos in Medieval Eastern Mediterranean Society: Contextualizing the History of a Monastic Republic (ca. 850–1550)“.

Im Rahmen des Starting Grants erforscht Dr. Chitwood die Entstehung und Entwicklung der byzantinischen Memoria, die Gebet, Fasten und Almosen für die Toten umfasst (Memoria in the Byzantine World, ca. 500-1500). Dabei wird untersucht, wie Praktiken, die das Schicksal der Verstorbenen steigern sollten, in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Kontexten fanden (Theologie, Erbrecht, Mönchtum) und gleichzeitig auch auf Widerstand stießen.

Das Forschungsvorhaben ist Teil der Thematischen Area 1: Umsorgtes Leben.
